PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor
PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be easily embedded into HTML. PHP generally runs on a web server, taking PHP code as its input and creating Web pages as output. However, it can also be used for command-line scripting and client-side GUI applications.
PHP can be deployed on most web servers and on almost every operating system and platform free of charge. The PHP Group also provides the complete source code for users to build, customize and extend according to their own use. PHP primarily acts as a filter.

The PHP program takes input from a file or stream containing text and special PHP instructions and outputs another stream of data for display. From PHP 4, the PHP parser compiles input to produce bytecode for processing by the Zend Engine, giving improved performance over its interpreter predecessor. PHP 5 uses the Zend Engine II.

jQuery - " Writes Less, Does More”, Javascript Library adds functionality to web sites combining Javascript, Ajax and CSS. It contains a common way of calling Javascript functions which allows powerful features and functions to be accessed in a consistent way, and with chaining allows greater interoperability between them.

What does all this mean? In short, it allows us to add sophisticated features and functions to sites quickly, and use a consistent set of commands and methods across the sites we develop. It allows us to implement functionality that makes sites not only look great but work great, and best of all, our solutions are standards compliant and cross-browser safe.

For instance,  should we be using it to create easily searchable tabular information, with the ability to re-sort the content based on the field you click on. All this is done in the user's browser using jQuery, with no page reload and no calls back to the server.
jQuery can also be used to create visual effects to web pages, for instance accordion style menus that can spring open and close. In many ways jQuery allows us to reproduce some of the user interface effects that Flash offers without the development overhead.
